Kristine Macasieb: Summer 2013 - Finals

It's about a month late, but here's how some of the projects I worked in this class are turning out. I still have quite a bit to do on the third one, but I'm getting there. I'm very sorry I missed the last class; my uncle was critically ill that Tuesday and then passed away the next day. Since then, I had been busy with family and the start of a new semester. But finally I have some things to post.

Hi,
 Finally finished! - (used color pencil)
   I made some changes to the floor,lighting of the sky, and reflections from the building.
 It might look a little crooked because I scanned it and everytime I tried, it turned out diagonal.

Kristine Macasieb: Interior tonals

Hello everyone. Sorry I missed last Tuesday's class. I was at a retreat from Sunday to Wednesday. Here are my lines and tonals so far. The first one is what I originally imagined in my head, but I came to like the 2nd and 3rd ones a little bit more.

Jesse,

I think your drawing and composition are both working better. I think you tonal is too dark overall.  Try to brighten the mid and background especially.  The foreground can remain dark because it's an ominous and dangerous place for the character to explore.  The scene is missing atmosphere and deep space.  Warmer temperature colors can be used in the lit areas.  More characters and ambient life around the village could help.  See image below.  I referenced Asher Brown Durand/ Hudson River School painters.

Here's the progress that I have so far for my first piece.

Here are thumbs for the next project. I chose to do the inside of the castle and so I went back to more byzantine and palace foyer references. Here, the prince meets the princess. However instead of just being a regular princess, I had this idea that she would be the guardian of the water of life. So the first time they meet, they would actually battle.

It's a room inside the ship where Lucy sleeps. It's not a specific scene from the book so there's no story behind it, it was more for designing the set.

I got my laptop fixed so I was able to start painting this week!

The brush strokes are very roughly applied for now but this is what I have so far:

Kristine Macasieb: Organic Tonal

Here's my black and white painting for an organic environment. I thought more about what could be taking place in this scene and decided that it would be after the prince got the water of life from the castle. He meets up with a shrewd magical dwarf, who has just informed him that his brothers are trapped in a ravine. The youngest prince tries talking the dwarf out of keeping them captive.

I had alot of trouble with the frozen waterfalls in the background. I tried to paint it after these kind of icicle formations but I'm still not very happy with how they came out.
